Transcript: An Introduction to Connect to Support

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

I'm Caroline Tomlinson and I'd like to introduce you to Connect to Support.

I came up with a website called shop4support when my son Joseph was given a personal budget and we found that we didn't know how to use it - where to go to buy his support, or find any information and advice to help us.

Connect to Support is Yorkshire and Humber's very own shop4support website for people needing social care. You can use it if the council fund your support, or if you pay for it yourself. It's really easy to use and even has a 'How to use this site' area of the website to help you.

INFORMATION AND ADVICE BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN .

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

I'd like explain how Connect to Support can help you. To start off, let's look at the 'Information and Advice' area.

Within the Information and Advice area you can find lots of useful information and contact details for your local area - including transport and how to get out and about, housing options, how to manage your money, tips on how to keep safe and healthy, even suggestions about things you might like to do with your life

SEARCH AND SHOP BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN.

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

I mentioned before that you can buy your support through Connect to Support - let me tell you about the 'Search and Shop' area.

The Search and Shop area is really just like a shopping centre, but online. It's full of different stores selling products like equipment that will help you in your home and services like nursing and personal and domestic care. You can ask the store owners questions about their products and services, just like you would in a real life store.

If you know what kind of thing you're looking for, you can even search for it using key words. It's a really easy way to buy the right support for you.

FIND LOCAL GROUPS AND ACTIVITIES BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

Living a good life doesn't have to mean spending money - it doesn't have to cost to get involved in your own community, that's where the 'Find Local Groups and Activities' area of the website comes in.

Here, you can find loads of low cost and even free local groups and activities to take part of in your area, like sports activities, craft, dance - it's a great way of getting involved in your community and making new friends.

NEED HELP BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN.

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

Your council have brought the Connect to Support website to you and they'll want to help you as much as they can.

Within the 'Need Help' area of Connect to Support you'll be able to find useful council information and contact details, so you know who to contact if you need help with anything. There's also answers to questions people often ask and an area where you can share your life stories with other people - it's a great way of getting ideas about how to live the life you want!

MY ACCOUNT BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

So, you might be wondering, if I'm buying my support online, how will I manage all the receipts and paperwork? That's what the 'My Account' area of the website is for.

In Connect to Support's My Account area you'll find all your personal details including any orders you have made, information about providers that you have bought from, your support team if you have one, plus financial statements, so that you can keep track of your personal budget if you have one. Forget having reams of paperwork - you can see it all very easily on screen!

MY LIFE BUTTON IS DISPLAYED ON SCREEN

CAROLINE TOMLINSON:

I know that when I've planned support for my son and others, I've needed help and advice, I've wanted to know what other people have done that works for them, so Connect to Support does that too, with the 'My Life' area.

The My Life area is like an online community where you can find out how to make a support plan with me - the easy way, read other people's stories about their lives and experiences and if you want, tell your own. There's also an online library with useful information, a blog, and Ask the Expert - where you can ask and share questions and advice with social care experts and other users. This is the best way for us to all lead our lives the way we want to - to share what works and what doesn't.

CAROLINE VOICE OVER OVER END STILL OF CONTACTS PEOPLE CAN USE TO GIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT CONNECT TO SUPPORT:

Connect to Support has been developed jointly with people needing support, personal assistants, and the third sector. We want to know what you think of it, please tell us what you think, so that we can make it work for you!
